Coaching 1st grade basketball can be challenging. The majority of books focus on teaching older, more skilled players. Here is a checklist of drills that most player in the 1st grade are capable of learning.

1st Grade Fundamental Checklist

Effort and Enjoyment

• Can have FUN!
• Can develop age-appropriate skills
• Can be a good teammate
• Can be LOUD and enthusiastic

Dribbling

• Stationary Dribble (strong hand) with head down
• Jogging Dribble (strong hand) with head down
• Lay-up Dribble  (strong hand) with head down
• Dribble with head down in half court game
• Dribble WITH violations (traveling double dribble) in half court game

Lay-ups

• Know the aiming point: Top Corner of the Square
• “BLOCK SHOT” Lay-up s / Block Lay-ups with no footwork
• Dribble lay-up SHOT (no correct footwork)
• “Mini” Mikan Lay-up Drill

Shooting

• Knows the shooting fundamentals: BEEF – balance, elbow, eyes, follow through
• Hold the ball correctly: line up the seams with shooting hand, non-shooting hand cover the side seams
• Imaginary shooting: Good “imaginary” shooting without the ball
• Right block shot, Left block shot (occasionally makes shots)
• left baseline, center, right baseline (occasionally makes shots)

Passing

• Know “TIPS TO TARGET” & “THUMBS DOWN”
• Stationary chest pass: Able to make a decent chest pass
• Stationary bounce pass: Able to make a decent bounce pass, better at selecting the proper point to have the ball bounce (3/4ths the distance).
• Game chest pass: Unable to regularly make a chest pass in half game. The pass most commonly used pass is a lob pass that is thrown in the general direction of a teammate.
• Game bounce pass: Rarely attempted in a game situation.

Catching

• Able to have hands up in receiving position.
• Stationary chest pass: Begins to catch a chest pass fairly consistently
• Stationary bounce pass: Able to catch a bounce pass consistently
• Game pass: Seldom able to catch a pass in a game situation.

Defense

• Able to get into a fair defensive stance.

With basketball games likely starting in December, we will have organizational practices beginning this week. This week each age group will gather for an initial practice to judge interest and divide into teams. A permanent practice schedule will be set for subsequent weeks. This week's schedule will be: Monday Night - 6:00pm - Mite Girls 7:00pm - Mite Boys Tuesday Night - 5:30pm - Biddys 8.5' goal 6:15pm - Biddys 10' goal Thursday Night - 6:00pm - Jr/Sr Girls 7:00pm - Jr/Sr Boys Our registration page is live. This year, basketball games may begin as early as the first week of December. Practices will begin the week of November 3. Registration fees can be paid online: $20 for Biddy teams (9 years and under) and $30 for all other age divisions. NOTE: Jersey orders and costs are the responsibility of each team.

Coaching 1st Grade Basketball: Teaching Lay-ups

A lay-up is the most basic way to score in the game of basketball. At the younger levels (K – Grade 3), focusing on using the correct footwork can be frustrating and futile. Very few developing players can use the correct footwork when attempting a lay-up.

So what lay-up fundamentals can you teach to younger players?

First, teach the players the correct aiming point for making a lay-up.

Use the backboard and aim for the top corner of the square: If players can understand the importance of identifying the correct aiming point when taking a lay-up, that is a great starting point. Ask your team what they should aim for when taking a lay-up. Have a little fun with the answers by following the advice of the players.

Below are the typical responses:

“THE BACKBOARD”: This is the best one. Shoot the ball all over the backboard and miss. Look at the player who gave your target and say “I hit the backboard, what is wrong. I am doing what you told me to do. I hit the backboard! Why isn’t it going in?”

“THE SQUARE”: With this response the players are getting closer, but you can still can have some fun by hitting the square, yet still missing the shot. Shoot the ball all over “the square” and intentionally miss. Look at the player who gave your target and say “I hit the square, what is wrong. I am doing what you told me to do. Why isn’t it going in? What is wrong?”

“THE TOP CORNER OF THE SQUARE”: Bingo! This is the correct response and the response EACH player should give to you the rest of the season and their playing career.

Once the players understand where to aim the basketball, the next step in the lay-up process is applying their knowledge to the shot.

Basketball Banquet March 23rd #obcbiddy

Basketball Banquet Sunday, March 23 at NoonThis year's OBC Basketball Banquet will take place on Sunday, March 23 at noon in the Gym. All players and coaches are encouraged to sit together at 11:00am worship. At the banquet, we will recognize each team and watch a slideshow of highlights from the season. Menu: Pizza, Salad, Dessert and Drinks. Coaches, players, and children under 5 are free. All other guests pay $5. Please register and pay online HERE.
