Life Advice From John Wooden's Dad
From the All Financial Matters Blog Site
By JLP | December 19, 2008
One of John Wooden’s biggest influences in his life was his dad, Joshua Wooden.
In his books (see the end of the post for a list of books), John Wooden explains how his dad gave him and his brothers simple rules to live by organized into what he called “Two Sets of Threes.” The first set was about honesty:
Never lie.
Never cheat.
Never steal.
The second set dealt with adversity:
Don’t whine.
Don’t complain.
Don’t make excuses.
Then, when John Wooden graduated from elementary school, his dad gave him a $2 bill and a card. On one side of the card was this poem by Reverend Henry Van Dyke:
Four things a man must learn to do
If he would make his life more true:
To think without confusion clearly,
To love his fellow-man sincerely,
To act from honest motives purely,
To trust in God and Heaven securely.
On the other side of the card, Joshua Wooden wrote “Seven Things to Do:”
1. Be true to yourself.
2. Help others.
3. Make each day your masterpiece.
4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
5. Make friendship a fine art.
6. Build a shelter against a rainy day.
7. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day.
Imagine if parents taught these guidelines to their kids!

Biddy Parents Update
Every Tuesday except when school is out. Check your teams practice time.
Games
On Friday nights during January and February. The schedule will be posted on the web site as soon as we get it. Players should be at the gym 15 minutes before scheduled game time. You can also check this site (http://www.yorkcountycba.com) for the schedule, league rules, pictures, and information. The church will have a basketball banquet in late March. We'll provide details later. Each parent must sign a liability waiver for the church and league before they can play in a league game. A copy of the waiver is on the web site.
Shirts
Team shirts must be worn for all games. Our shirts will be navy blue. You may use your shirts from previous years. Contact your coach by Tuesday, December 9 if you need a shirt for this year.
Pants
Preferably shorts (without pockets). Any color will be OK.
Mission
To provide growth through Christian recreation and fellowship. Everyone should exhibit behavior Everyone should exhibit behavior conducive to Christian principles.
Goals
We have five goals for your children. The first is we want them to do their best. The second is we want them to have fun. The third is to learn to play together as a team. The fourth is to learn the skills and rules of basketball, and the fifth is to practice good sportsmanship.
Support your child by providing a basketball (intermediate or regulation size) and goal. Skills will develop better by going to the larger size instead of a smaller size. The basketball goal should be 8 1/2 feet high, however, a regulation height goal (10 feet) will be fine. Your child will have more fun if they practice (dribble and shoot) at home between games and practices. Keep the games fun. Cheer the kids on; leave the game coaching at home.
We need your child to be at every practice and game. Please give one of the coaches a call if you know your child will not be able to attend.
Thanks for your patience. Your comments are always welcome.
